Day 1: Arrival at Machame Hut Camp
Our journey commences with a brief drive to the Machame trailhead (~5,380’). Following registrations with the park rangers, we ascend through the montane forests, meandering through the mossy jungle en route to the Machame Hut camp. Hiking: 5-7 hours
Overnight Altitude: ~9,350′
Day 2: Expedition to Shira Plateau
After breakfast, we proceed through the forest, taking in the breathtaking scenery as we journey through the moorlands. This leg offers remarkable views of Kibo peak, the highest point of Kilimanjaro. Hiking: 4-6 hours
Overnight Altitude: ~12,500′
Day 3: Barranco Camp Adventure
Today’s trek involves a longer journey aimed at acclimatization. We embark on an acclimatization hike to Lava Tower (~15,190’) for lunch, followed by a descent to Barranco valley. The option to ascend Lava Tower itself may be possible, conditions permitting. Hiking: 6-8 hours
Overnight Altitude: ~13,044′
Day 4: Progress to Karanga Camp
Continuing our acclimatization efforts, we tackle the steep Barranco Wall before traversing ridges and valleys on the way to Karanga camp. There might be time for an afternoon acclimatization hike. Hiking: 4-5 hours
Overnight Altitude: ~13,106′
Day 5: Reaching Barafu Camp
The circuit presses forward as we arrive at our final camp before the summit, Barafu camp. With ups and downs along ridges and valleys, we enjoy an early supper and rest, preparing for the summit ascent. Hiking: 3-4 hours
Overnight Altitude: ~15,331′
Day 6: Summit Triumph and Descent to Mweka Camp
Starting around midnight, we commence the summit ascent, guided by headlamps under the starlit sky. The slow ascent leads us to Stella Point and eventually the summit. After celebrating and capturing the moment, we descend to Mweka camp. Hiking: 6-7 hours ascent to summit, followed by 6-9 hours of descent Summit: ~19,341′
Overnight Altitude: ~10,500′
Day 7: Descending to Mweka Park Gate and Return to Arusha
Our final descent through the rainforest takes us to Mweka Gate. Following lunch and farewells to our mountain crew, we exit Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. The journey concludes with a return to Arusha, offering a warm shower and a celebratory dinner. Hiking: 3-5 hours
